Welcome to Level 2 Award in Practical Animal Care Skills at Wirral Met. This course is designed to develop practical skills and knowledge within Animal Care and Management, covering a wide range of topics through practical and theoretical learning in our reptile and mammal rooms.

Upon completion of the course, you will be equipped with the skills, knowledge and experience to progress in education or start your career.

Course Details

This course covers a wide range of topics that will prepare you for a career in animal care and management. Your lessons will be a combination of theory lessons in the classroom and practical lesson with our animal collection in college. Topics covered include:

  • Promoting and maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals
  • Monitoring and maintaining accurate records
  • Breeds and grooming
  • Animal biology
  • Practical handling
  • Habitat management

This is an evening course delivered for 3 hours a week over 30 weeks.
 
This course starts in November 2024.
Entry Guidelines


To study a Level 2 qualification, you will need:

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 3, including English and Maths (or L1  Functional Skills in English and Maths)
                                     OR
A relevant Level 1 qualification with GCSE English and Maths at grade 3 or above (or L1 Functional Skills in English and Maths)

Satisfactory interview and/or assessment

Assessment Method

Students are assessed through assignments and projects.

Several of the assignments are based on practical activities.

Additional Information

To ensure you are enrolled on the right course of study, the first few weeks of the course will be an extended induction period.

During this time your communication, numeracy and study skills, behaviour, time management and attendance will be assessed as well as your own preferred method of learning. If we believe the course does not meet your requirements, we will discuss suitable alternatives with you.

On successful completion of this course, you may be able to progress on to further study at Level 3 or a career in animal care and management.
