Wirral Met College is supporting a number of events as part of the Festival of Learning which takes place during the months of May and June this year.

The Festival of Learning is a national celebration of lifelong learning for people of all ages, showcasing the achievements people have made after learning something new.  This is a busy but exciting time of the year where Wirral Met College students have plenty of opportunity to demonstrate the skills they have learnt through their study programmes.

Our thanks go to the Mayor of Wirral, Councillor Les Rowlands, who recently came into the salons at our Conway Park Campus to give our students a Masterclass in Barbering.  The Mayor, who runs his own barber shops locally, took time out of his busy schedule to provide a hands-on demonstration of barbering techniques.

The College’s Students’ Union is working in partnership with Community Action Wirral during Volunteering Week commencing 23rd May to host Volunteering Fairs on each of their main campuses.  Local organisations are invited to come along to promote their services and volunteering opportunities to the students, whilst extolling the values of volunteering to the local community.  Volunteering provides excellent opportunities for students to develop their practical and social skills, confidence and experience whilst working with a wide range of people from different backgrounds, helping them to prepare for the workplace.

Our hairdressing, beauty and fashion and photographic make-up students will be taking part in a glittering Gala event on the 15th June 2016 at Heswall Hall.  Students are already working hard on their preparations, developing hair styles, make-up and costumes representing iconic global landmarks as part of the theme of ‘Wonders of the World’.

On Friday 10th June 2016, catering and hospitality students are working alongside the Royal Navy to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the Battle of Jutland which started in May 1916.  The students will be working alongside Navy chefs to prepare, cook and serve a sumptuous meal at the Naval Regional Headquarters in Liverpool, providing the students with an outstanding opportunity to develop their skills and experience working in a unique environment.

The International Festival of Business starts on the 13th June 2016 and Wirral Met students from travel and tourism, business and English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) will be actively working alongside the festival organisers Liverpool Vision to ensure the events run as smoothly as possible.

Wirral Met students will also be taking part in the Star Awards on the 17th May 2016 where they recognise their teachers’ excellent teaching skills by nominating them for a Star Award.

With the new 19+ Advanced Learner Loans being introduced in September 2016, there has never been a better time for adults to start improving their lives through learning something new.  The new loans, previously available for those aged 24+ studying on level 3 courses, are now available for younger adults aged 19+ studying on level 3 courses.  This means that more people can fit learning in around their work and family commitments, without having to pays fees upfront. More information is available by clicking here or phoning one of our Student Advisers on 0151 551 7777.
