Visitor Economy Week provides exciting opportunities for students to learn about the wealth of career opportunities in the Visitor Economy.  The vibrant and rapidly growing visitor Economy encompasses a wide range of industries supporting tourism including hotels, restaurants and bars, culture, entertainment and travel.

In the Liverpool City Region, the Visitor Economy is a major growth sector and already generates £4.53bn and supports over 53,500 jobs.  Liverpool is the fifth most popular city for overseas visitors.

This year, Wirral Met is leading the way for students in schools and colleges in Wirral.  As part of the ‘Adopt a school’ initiative, students from Stanton Road Primary School will be attending Wirral Met to make their own pizza and garlic bread, working alongside one of the college’s chef/lecturers.

It will be a busy week for full-time catering students who will be preparing breakfast canapés for the Visitor Economy Week Launch Event at Liverpool Football Club at the start of the week and then preparing and cooking the main course at the Visitor Economy Week closing dinner at the Richmond Hotel on Thursday 7th February.  Catering students will also be taking part in a culinary arts competition to create a vegetarian main course which will feature on a lunch menu served in the Birches Restaurant at the Conway Park Campus.  Former student Sam Creedon, who has worked for Michel Roux and Jason Atherton, will be judging this competition.

Former Wirral Met student and alumni Paul Askew, who is Chef Patron of The Art School Restaurant and one of the North West’s most popular chefs, will be providing a Masterclass to catering students.

Our Junior Bake-Off competition is going from strength to strength this year, with students entering from Bebington High School, St John Plessington High School, West Kirby Grammar School, Whitby High School and Wirral Hospital School/St Joseph Paxton.  There will be fierce competition from the entrants to beat the high standards shown in last year’s competition.  This year’s theme is a bake which best represents the students’ schools; judging takes place in the College when the students will present their bake to a team of judges including Lorna Tyson, owner of Mere Brook House at Thornton Hough, Wirral.

Wirral Met offers an extensive range of study programmes to support careers across the Visitor Economy.
