Construction students from Wirral Met College received valuable insight into site preparation works today (Tuesday 25 February) by Soilfix and Peel L&P.

Level 3 students across carpentry & joinery, electrical and plumbing gained an insight into remediation works at the Northbank sites on the Wirral Waters development project and an overview of the careers available in and the skills required for this sector.

The site visit was organised by contractors Soilfix and Peel L&P and included talks by industry experts including Richard Mawdsley, Development Director at Wirral Waters and George Evans, Soilfix Managing Director.

The remediation works Soilfix are working on are fundamental as they will enable the first 1,000 homes to be built at Wirral Waters (through the Legacy Foundation project, Urban Splash/Peel JV and the Belong Extra Care home). The students learnt about the technical requirements for preparing brownfield sites for construction to begin and then, kitted out in their personal protective equipment, were escorted on a visit to the remediation project at Dock Road so that they could see first-hand what is involved in this type of project.

Wirral Met is very proud to be the education partner of Peel L&P for the Wirral Waters development and is dedicated to the training and development of the workforce that will build the vision of Wirral Waters. The College is keen to develop ongoing links with contractors working on these latest developments in order to provide work placements and opportunities to help students develop their skills to prepare them for employment at Wirral Waters and beyond.

Sue Higginson, Principal and Chief Executive of Wirral Met College said: “There is no better motivation for our students than the opportunity to contribute to the regeneration of our community. As a vocational college, everything we do it related to the world of work and we are delighted to work alongside employers who contribute to this by helping us to design and deliver a curriculum designed to create a talented, skilled workforce.”
